Music

Funk, Soul, R&B, Pop, Hard Rock, Soft Rock and Disco all carved out their place in the music world in the 1970s. The late 70s also witness the birth of another young music style: hip-hop.

A statue was planned to be erected in Armstrong's birthplace of New Orleans. Incredible jazz-only festivals were staged in Monterey and Newport. 

Along with the glamorous imagery and glittering costumes came a quality characterized by some observers as "Rock n Rouge" because of their bi-sexual overtones.

The Rolling Stones also toured the US for the first time since 1969 in support of their iconic Exile on Main Street album.

Jazz was humming along nicely, with the forming of the World Jazz Association and the Las Vegas Jazz Society. Leaders of the jazz movement were such as Lonnie Liston Smith, Quincy Jones, Eddie Harris, and many more.

Bands

ABBA, Swedish Europop group that was among the most commercially successful groups in the history of popular music. More than a year after the triumph at Eurovision, ABBA  truly established the group as a global pop phenomenon. 

When Lonnie Liston Smith made the transition from sideman to leader in 1973, it was the beginning of a fusion/crossover/post-bop band. From 1974 on, the Cosmic Echoes' albums were typically about 80 percent instrumental, but included a few vocal offerings.

The Young brothers formed AC/DC in Sydney, Australia, in 1973 with Angus, famous for his schoolboy short-trousers outfit, on lead guitar and Malcolm on rhythm guitar.

Styles

Disco is like a time capsule for many of us. The music, the clothes, and the dance moves are all things that remind us of our youths and what we did to get down and boogie with friends. We got dressed up, went downtown, and partied hard until it was time to go home or maybe go for breakfast.

 The 1970s an underground urban movement known as "hip hop" began to develop in the South Bronx area of New York City focusing on emceeing (or MCing), breakbeats, and house parties.

Soul music is a genre of African American popular music that led to many later genre. The first soul songs were created when gospel songs were changed into secular songs by rewriting the lyrics.

A gospel singer who changed gospel songs into secular songs was Sam Cooke. Sam had joined the gospel group Soul Stirrers as a teenager, but he was forced to leave the group in 1956 after recording the song Lovable

NASA's Apollo 13 Moon Mission returns to Earth successfully after abandoning its mission to the Moon after experiencing oxygen tank problems and an explosion.

The Watergate Scandal begins when White House operatives are caught burglarizing the Democratic National Committee

India becomes the sixth nuclear power when it successfully detonates a nuclear bomb. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak create the Apple Computer Company. 

Pope Paul VI dies and is replaced by Pope John Paul I who also dies this year and is replaced by Pope John Paul II. 

 As people realized the power of these new home computers a new use was found and that was the beginning of the video game.

Is a reggae song made popular by Jamaican Bob Marley and The Wailers. It was released on 1974.

Baby, Please Don't Go

Is the second song by the Australian hard rock band AC/DC. It was released in 1975. 

Dancing Queen

was written by ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. It was released in 1976
