Music

Popular music in the 1990s saw the continuation of teen pop and dance-pop trends which had emerged in the 1970s and 1980s. Furthermore, hip hop grew and continued to be highly successful in the decade, with the continuation of the genre's golden age.

Similarly to the 1980s, rock music was also a very popular sltyle in the 1990s, the new wave and glam metal dominated scene of the time, grunge, Britpop, industrial rock and other alternative rock music emerged and took over as the most popular of the decade. 

In 1993, Many music stores revolted against high CD prices by selling used CDs. The music industry saw this as a conflict of interest and threatened to withhold advertising dollars from any dealers who sold used CDs. At the same time, a massive shift in hip hop music began as a new type of rap called gangsta rap was becoming very popular. Suddenly everyone wanted to say they were from Compton so they would look hard. The movie Boyz N Tha Hood captures the 1991-ish feeling in LA perfectly.

Bands

Tupac Shakur joined in 1990 on a Digital Underground, an Oakland-based rap group that had scored a Billboard Top 40 hit with the novelty single "The Humpty Dance ." Shakur performed on two Digital Underground albums in 1991, This Is an EP Release and Sons of the P, before his solo debut, 2Pacalypse Now, later that year.

Nirvana, American alternative rock group whose breakthrough album, Nevermind (1991), announced a new musical style, the grunge, and gave voice to the post-baby boom young adults known as Generation X. The members were Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.

Radiohead are an English rock band formed in Abingdon, in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke , brothers Jonny Greenwood  and Colin Greenwood , Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals) and Philip Selway (drums, percussion). They have worked with producer Nigel Godrich and cover artist Stanley Donwood since 1994. Radiohead's experimental approach is credited with advancing the sound of alternative rock. 

Slyles

Electronic Dance Music  was a new genre that emerged during the 1990s, proving popular among the club scene particularly across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The music is characterized by having between 120 and 150 beats per minute, drum machines, synthesizers, and other electronic instruments. 

The swing revival, also called retro swing and neo-swing, was a renewed interest in swing music, beginning around 1989.The music was generally rooted in the big bands of the swing era of the 1930s and 1940. Many neo-swing bands practiced contemporary fusions of swing, jazz, and jump blues with rock, punk rock, ska, and ska punk music Adult contemporary music is a style of pop music that emphasizes relaxed rhythms, un-distorted instruments, love-focused lyrics, and vocal virtuosity.

Adult contemporary radio stations and playlists often blend soft rock, smooth R&B, folk rock, easy listening, and gentle pop rock hits. The term Madchester (or the Manchester scene) was coined for the alternative rock music scene that developed in Manchester, UK, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Nelson Mandela is released from prison in South Africa and becomes the leader of the ANC. Euro Disney is opened in France. Genocide and Civil War take place in Rwanda with an estimated 500,000 or more people killed. Scientists at the Roslin Institute unveil "Dolly" the first successfully cloned sheep. Eleven countries begin to use the Euro as their currency. 

The pioneering peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing internet service Napster, which was first launched in Fall 1999, was the first peer-to-peer software to become massively popular.

The 1990s is often remembered as a decade of relative peace and prosperity: The Soviet Union fell, ending the decades-long Cold War, and the rise of the Internet ushered in a radical new era of communication, business and entertainment.

Bill Clinton is elected for a second term as the United States President after he defeats Bob Dole. Princess Diana and Prince Charles get divorced. The United States has a budget surplus for the first time in thirty years and Helen Clark becomes the first female Prime Minister elected in New Zealand.
